An Appeal for the family of Pastor Artur Suleimanov ...

Zina and Artur Suleimanov were pastors of Hosanna Church in Dagestan's capital city, Makhachkala

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)

Since the day those words were spoken by Jesus, many have followed that
commission given to us all ... and many have given their lives in the pursuit of that task. And, for every believer who has literally gone into the world of non-believers as well as seekers, many thousands have provided prayer and support for them.
Our brother in Christ, Pastor Artur Suleimanov, has Thursday, July 15, 2010 given the ultimate sacrifice in his attempt to reach the lost. Having been martyred in Dagestan in the North Caucasus region of southern Russia, he leaves behind, along with a successful ministry, a wife and children.

Christ will make sure that the work started by Pastor Artur will continue by raising up
another to fill his shoes. And, He will also take care of the surviving family, (wife and five children) by giving us ... those who stay behind to pray and support ... a chance to help that family with our love, prayers and financial support.

Words, Words, Words

Litte children have been heard on the playground chanting, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me!" It is usually quite the opposite ... the school yard bully has used words to hurt them badly.

Words are the currency of our society. The Second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use. The Bible contains 774,746 words ... 593,493 in the Old Testament and 181,253 in the New.

Blind and deaf from the age of 19 months, Helen Keller could neither hear nor see a word but used them to great effect writing a total of 12 published books and several articles. With the help of her profound faith, she transformed her life into one lived in service of the Good.

"The Bible gives me a deep, comforting sense that things seen are temporal and things unseen are eternal," she said.

It was God, Himself, who used His Word to the greatest effect. If you take time to read the first chapter of Genesis, you will find that it was with His WORD that He created everything!

David penned these words in Psalm 33:6: "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made ..." Again in verse 9: "For He spoke, and it was done ..."

Isaiah stated: "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our god stands forever." (40:8)

John starts his book with these words: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

In the book of Proverbs, there are 35 statements that admonish the use of the mouth, from whence pours out words. God realized the power of words when He inspired Solomon to write: "The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked." (Proverbs 10:11).

But, it is John who gives us the understanding of the greatest power of the word when he quotes Jesus in John 5:24-25: "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from life to death."

That is the ultimate power of words!

The little children may have been wrong in their chant ... words can hurt us. However, the good news is that words, the wonderfully inspired Words of the Bible can also give us life, in its fullest and everlasting.

That is the Good Word!

High Value of the Low Estate

Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "Happy are you poor; the Kingdom of God is yours! Happy are you who are hungry now; you will be filled! Happy are you who weep now; you will laugh! Happy are you when people hate you, reject you, insult you, and say that you are evil, all because of the Son of Man! Be glad when that happens and dance for joy, because a great reward is kept for you in heaven. For their ancestors did the very same things to the prophets. But how terrible for you who are rich now; you have had your easy life! How terrible for you who are full now; you will go hungry! How terrible for you who laugh now; you will mourn and weep!” (Luke 6:20-25)

Lately great emphasis has been placed on the financial difficulties in the world. For the people whose life savings have been lost by the collapse of the stock market, the danger is that we will focus too much on money, riches, and wealth without thinking about true values in life.

The words of Jesus (above) remind us that true values are not measured by the size of our bank account or the financial legacy we may leave behind, but true values are in the measure of a man or woman in their relationship with God and one another; that being Humility.

The thrust here is not an appeal for us to give away everything we have, go on welfare, reduce our calorie intake by half, stop laughing, and encourage people to reject us. Jesus gives no such command in this passage.

Rather, he is telling us .. his followers .. to accept our low state, because if we are less concerned about our economic security, our social acceptability, and our reputation, we will be happier then if we are obsessed with these things.

The focus of this passage is not on world hunger or poverty .. although Jesus felt deeply the plight of the underprivileged .. but on the individual disciples and their value system.

For us who are disciples of Jesus, we need to appreciate our modest circumstances and place our value on the kingdom quality that is humility. The apostle Peter tells us in his first letter; “Humble yourselves, then, under God's mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you. “ (1Peter 5:6-7)

I appreciate the fact that some of us are worried and concerned about the situation we face. The question is; what difference can you make in your situation?

If you can do something, then stop worrying, pray for wisdom and do it! If you cannot do something that will change your situation, then stop worrying and pray .. let the Lord care for you. Either way you will discover happiness.
